First, you will need to download D-Fend Reloaded and install it onto your Windows Vista Machine. I have D-Fend Reloaded version 0.5.0 (Build 14)
D-Fend Reloaded (DOSBox Front End)
When installing D-Fend Reloaded on Vista, there is a part in the install process where it asks what directory your games will be in. Instead of the default, I chose C:\
Strange. Anyway's what you need to do is click on the Install file. Note: When you click the Install file it will lead you through a couple of screens and you save the game onto C:\
The current version of D-Fend Reloaded also contains DOSBox so you install both programs at the same time. Next, you download Pool of Radiance. The first thing I noticed with the game folder is that if you open up the Pool folder, instead of seeing all the game files like you usually would see, you only see 2 files. One install file, and one disk1.arj.
The program folder will be C:\POOLRAD
but at the end of the install, it showed an error message that says that the game might not have installed correctly. Nothing I can do about that. Disregard the message. Now I notice that in the C:\POOLRAD folder, I can now see all the files that we would normally be seeing if I were running any pre-vista version of Windows. :o)
Great! Now, its time to open up D-Fend Reloaded and click "Profile" and then "Add". Enter a name for your Pool of Radiance profile, and in the "Program File" field, browse to where the start file is located, which is C:\POOLRAD\START.EXE
The rest of the default settings in D-Fend Reloaded can be left as is, and Pool of Radiance should be able to run now.
I do like to run the game in windowed mode though so you can click on "Graphics" and uncheck "Start in fullscreen mode".
If the game is running too fast, or too slow for your tastes, you can change the CPU settings by clicking "CPU", but I find that 3000 CPU settings works well with the Gold Box series games.
